Anybody got any ideas?

First! Happy Birthday to Kozmo! He turns 8 years old TODAY!

Kozmo

Now, fellow bloggers! Its Barb and I need you guys to give me your advice.

I have been traveling a lot since Dave’s (the Daddy) accident. Because of the way the Health System works up here and because Dave’s address is in Midway and he lives in the Interior Health Region, he can’t be transferred here to Vancouver, which is in the Coastal Heath Region, where I live and work. Because of my benefits (and bills) I can’t afford to quit work…so I get to drive about 16 hours each weekend to visit Dave. This means I am not home as much as I should be and this is stressing out the cats-especially Kozmo.

He is a lover, not a fighter and Marv and Ninja and Jo Jo love to harass him. Soooooo Kozmo acts out by peeing – in my closet, on the bathroom floor, on the carpet on the stairs, I alex’s bedroom, on clothes in the laundry basket, in front of the litter boxes (there are 4-1 for each cat) — frankly, he’s peeing almost everywhere! And its not just when I am away, he seems to do it most when I am at home! I was getting dressed this morning and brushing my teeth and he went into my closet, climbed over the box-barriers I had put in there and peed on the carpet! I’m really glad I have one of those little rug cleaning machines, otherwise my land lady would be livid.

I have tried everything I can think of..I’ve put a litter box in my closet, I clean the boxes daily (and sometime twice daily), 2 of the boxes don’t have covers, I’m using the same litter that I (and Dave) have used for years and I tried using a different litter in one of the boxes, but that’s not helped. I have even tried letting Kozmo have the bedroom to himsled during the day…

I had to take the weekend off because of work, and I figured that YOU guys all have experienced this at some point…

I am at my wits end! Does anybody have any good ideas?

  1. We’re sorry you and Kozmo and the other kitties are going through this. Kozmo is obviously stressed by the situation. You could try a few things. Feliway diffuser plug-ins and Rescue Remedy might help. You could give him Zyklene which is a supplement (made of hydrolyzed milk protein) that has a calming effect. A calming collar might help as well.

    1. I had forgotten about the diffuser! Alex put it in the drawer when it was empty, I shall have to get some more refills. It worked great when we were getting them used to all being together again. If it stops the cat wars I will be happy.

  2. The first suggestion is a trip to the vet to rule out any urinary tract problem that may be causing this. Most of us are probably jumping to the conclusion that he is acting out because his world has been disrupted and he has no other way to let you know the stress he is feeling, and that may in fact be the problem. It may also be a coincidence and he has something physical going on, so i would rule that out first.

Then talk to the vet and see if there is anything you can give him to help him with his stress. Yes, there are products (like Feliway) that can help cats cope with times like this, and there are even medications. It may seem silly to talk about an anti-anxiety medication for a cat, but desperate times can call for desperate measures.

If this is all just about him being stressed that his Daddy is not home, you are leaving frequently, and the other cats are not playing nice, the only other thing besides lowering the stress level somehow would be to either take him with you on weekends (if you can find a pet friendly hotel and if that won’t stress him out worse), or, and i hate this solution but it works, get a large kennel for him and he has to live in it, with food, water, litter and bedding in there, at all times that you are not with him and physically paying attention to him. It’s drastic, but it would only be until the Daddy is back home, whenever that is.

Try your vet first, vets have lots of tricks and suggestions that we may never have thought to do.

Praying for a speedy recovery for Dave, and a much happier birthday for Kosmo than he seems to be having right now.

    1. Hi Mimi, yes, I did take him to the vet to rule out the UTI. That’s the first thing I did. I also took him last week to double check. I know it’s stress. I will get more felway. I filled the diffusers when the cats first arrived and I notice theyneed refilling….
      Thanks

  3. I am so sorry that Kozmo is going through this and certainly that YOU are. You of course know why he is doing this. If only Alex could be there to help or that they might be together, That is not to be right now, so a solution has to be found. I am not doing a bit of good saying that. But if I could, I would do something to change the dynamic. I will be thinking and thinking. Katie loves her handsome Kozmo and he loves her too. She will put her thinking cap on too. Kozmo, I have room with a beddie you could use if only you could. XXXOOOXXXOOO
Love and smoochies to Kozmo and love to you, Mom.

Oh, Kozmo… Life has been a bit hard of late, huh? I wish I had some sort of magic wand to wave your way. I don’t. All I can manage is a great big ball of Love with the capital ell to send via the etherwebs and say that I think Messymimi is probably on the ball with her response. Will put up some POTP that an answer comes soon for you all.

Barb – hang in there darlin’; it is just so difficult travelling for a loved one in such a situation (I am having to do similar for my father – but having no pets makes this a ton easier). YAM xx

    1. I would like it if we could get Dave transferred to a closer hospital. I am NOT looking forward to going over a couple of high mountain passes. We are crossing our fingers he will be well enough to come to stay with me in Vancouver at Christmas…I hope your Dad is doing well.

  5. I’d listen to Mimi. She’s been around cats for most of her life and knows the ends and outs. I hope you get this issues resoled soon. I love all your kitties and you too.

    Have a blessed weekend. ♥

  6. Well, I agree with Mimi too, just what you need, making time for a Vet visit. Maybe you could board him next trip and let them have the weekend to check out all possibilities. Purrs, hugs and love from all of us.

    1. Thank Terry and Brian,
The Vet says Kozmo is in great health, though his teeth could use a cleaning. Boarding him for a weekend might be a plan.
      Thnx Barb

  8. Oh poor you, Barb. Have you tried pee pads in places like your closet? Aunt Pauline has a female cat who sprays cos she has injuries from her street life. Aunt Pauline has peep pads all over the walls. MOL! In fact, I shouldn’t admit it but TW puts pee pads in my litter box cos I aim high too.
On another note, we’re shocked to read your health care system isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

  9. Ugh Barb I feel so bad for you. I was going to say what Mimi said and then I read your response. My sister-in-law is going through something similar, (OMG I TYPED A LONG POST TWICE and both times it deleted!). She brought in a male cat and her senior male cat is doing what Kozmo is doing EVERYWHERE. I am not a believer in Feliway, I do not think it works at all. I think 1) Kozmo is extremely stressed 2) He is doing this when you are home for attention, even negative attention in his mind is GOOD attention I would google some stuff from Jackson Galaxy and some others. I am so sorry you are all going through all of this! Happy Birthday Kozmo and sending lots of love.

    1. Happy Rosh Hashanah! Yes Kozmo is extremely stressed. This is the longest he’s been away from home (and his Dad). There are 2 younger males who like to rough house and when he comes for cuddles with Mom…Marv beats him up (Marv does not like me spending time with the others). I am trying hard to give Kozmo “just Mom” time. But it’s tough when there are 5 of them and 1 of me. I will google.

  10. When Fiona passed away, Giulietta was peeing everywhere but the litter box. It was obvious she was lost without her sister. The vet put her on Hill’s urinary stress prescription diet. She pees outside the box now maybe a couple of times a year. I was using the calming collars for a long time, and I do feel they helped. I would put them on everybody if you try this. And I do know Jackson Galaxy has a lot of various products to counteract stress. I am so sorry both you and Kozmo have to deal with this. Kitties Blue and I send him happy birthday wishes. 🎂🎉🎁🎈And we all send him POTP and love and prayers for you.

    1. Thanks, I have ordered a calming collar. Along with the feliway. I’m hoping it will get us through to Alex getting Back from Singapore. Having 2 people around means everyone gets more attention and much less stress.
      Thanks

  11. Happy birthday to Kozmo! Can you close him in a room by himself? Like his own mini-apartment with a litter box, food, water, toys, etc. That would separate him and give him his own space. If you do that, you’d need to spend time with just him in case this is attention related. Even if you don’t keep him separate all the time, maybe you could spend a few hours with him alone in a room? That way he knows he’d get you to himself sometimes without competing with the cats who are more pushy. Keeping Bear and Ellie separate overnight caused the stress of introducing them every day when we let her out. It actually worked better to let her stay out and work it out amongst themselves. Of course, no one was peeing though. And it wasn’t a three on one bully situation. I don’t know if Comfort Zone or Feliway would work. In many cases, I think it doesn’t – especially when a cat is under this much stress. There just isn’t a good solution here. In separating the cats, that can create more problems if you can’t provide enough stimulation and attention to the lone cat. Have you tried something to grab his attention? Like a TV show or access to a window? Something to keep him from getting bored if he’s by himself. Oh, and the other problem … when I tried this with Kitty and Bear, Bear would sit outside the door and howl and tear up carpet and that stressed Kitty out as much as letting them both roam the house. What did work is that Kitty found her own hiding spot that she could reasonably protect herself in. Kozmo might need a hiding spot like that. She found it naturally, so I’m not sure how to do the same with Kozmo.

  12. I have tried keeping him in his own sanctuary and he started to shred the carpet under the door! Now perhaps a super hiding spot might do the trick!

Like other commenters above, as long as health issues have been ruled out, maybe diffusers and calming collars will help. We send love, and POTP, for you all. XO

  14. Alas, I have never been in this situation so can offer nothing that probably hasn’t already been suggested by my elders and betters. But we wish Kozmo a very happy and chilled out birthday and that Dave gets better soon.
I would wonder though if there is not a provision for some sort of temporary transfer from one health area to another—a dispensation maybe that just needs some obscure legal form that is filled deep in a bureaucrats office draw? I know for a fact that sometimes people say ‘no’ when in fact they either just don’t know or can’t be bothered…… Maybe a lawyer or citizens organization versed in medical law could assist?
Lots of healing and birthday and Sunday Selfie purrs.

  16. Hi Barb! It is good to hear from you even though it is under these stressful circumstances.
I can only suggest Feliway the same as many others have done. When Eric died Flynn became very stressed and wanted nothing to do with us, so I got a Feliway diffuser.
He wasn’t peeing everywhere like Kozmo, but it really did help him a lot.
    Happy birthday, Kozmo!

  18. As there are no kitties here in the home at this time, can give no help … but I see others have offered much … but I can purr and pray for ALL of you. This is a hard, hard time you are going through in so many ways and not just the issues with Kozmo. I pray your load will lighten soon dear Barb, you are an angel on earth doing all you do … hugs and love, Ann

  19. First of all Barb, so happy to hear from you even though it’s due to a difficult situation with the gang! I’ve been hoping that Dave was doing well and you weren’t having to travel that long way as often but as long as you are doing that, I think everyone has given you some super ideas to try. Feliway and calming collars (maybe for EVERYONE) may do the trick or at least help. Once things settle down in the household I’m SURE Kozmo will settle down and be happy again…………I just hope things get better for all of you soon.

Hugs and lots of love to all of you!

  22. Happy Belated Birthday, Kozmo. Sorry we missed it…and we wish you many more!

Sorry you are having all these troubles. Which is stressful for all of you and esp your Miss Barb.
Petcretary has no other ideas, either, she has not been in this type of situation before…it must be horrible for you, Barb.
So we will purr hard, offer POTP, and lots of love and hugs. The pups will wag and aroo, too:)

And please send our regards and get well wishes to Dave. Would a visit from Kozmo to Dave be feasible? We get lots of kitty visitors in our nursing home…the latest was a wee just rescued black furball, with a white blaze, just like Kozmo! OMC!!
